Chillums are used extensively for smoking a combination of marijuana and tobacco. This combination adds to the flavor of the fumes of smoke.

Smoking Chillums the Indian way- Safi cloth is soaked in water and stone is inserted to make a filter. After this the herb or substance to be used for smoking is kept in the chillum. After igniting the herb, smoker holds the chillum with both the hands. However, it is interesting to note that a smoker can inhale smoke without actually touching the chillum with lips. Sages or devotees of Lord Shiva enchant the name of god before inhaling the fumes and thank their god for the life they are having.

Smoking Chillums as per Rastafari ceremony- According to the Rastafari ceremony, the ritual chillum so used is made from cow’s horn or cone-shaped wood piece with a fitted long drawtube that produces smoke. The vapors so produced cool down the smoke before they reach the user’s mouth.
