Smoking Bongs- What are Bongs?

Bong is again, a tool to smoke cannabis or marijuana with pipe but this time with addition of water. The structure of bong is similar to the Hookah; moreover, the function of bongs and hookah is similar as they both produce same results. The term ‘Bong’ is inspired from the Thai word ‘Baung’ that stands for a cylindrical wooden tube, pipe, and container made of bamboo. Bong is a pipe with a miniature water chamber through which the smoke passes before it is inhaled by the user.

Bongs are filled with water to cool down the smoke and filter the particulate matter. Many smokers add ice or alcohol in place of water. The addition of alcohol does not increase the effect but improves the flavor of the smoke. To give you a clear picture, here is a summary of different parts of a bong:

• Mouthpiece- As the name suggests you put this part of bong in your mouth. Using mouthpiece, you smoke the substance.
• Chamber- The smoke collects at this location in the bong and stays there until it is inhaled. The size of chamber might vary with the different bong designs.     
• Base- You store water in this part of bong and this part is comparatively wider than chamber. However, the size might vary with varied designs.
• Stem- This long tube connects the base to mouthpiece through the chamber and is located higher than the water level. It smoke is allowed to pass through the stem to reach the mouthpiece
• Bowl- This is a removable cap where you ignite the marijuana or smoking herb
